Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants

Will dental implant surgery hurt?
No. Dental implant placement is performed with local numbing and, when chosen, IV sedation or general anesthesia. Patients do not feel pain during the procedure. Some mild soreness afterward is normal and is managed with medication and rest.

Can I be asleep during dental implant surgery?
Yes. Many patients choose IV sedation or general anesthesia so they can remain deeply relaxed or fully asleep during implant placement. This is especially helpful for patients with anxiety, strong gag reflexes, special needs, or complex medical histories.

How long do dental implants last?
With proper care and regular dental visits, dental implants can last many years — often decades. The crown or bridge attached to the implant may need replacement over time due to normal wear, but the implant itself is designed to be long-lasting.

Am I too old for dental implants?
Age alone does not disqualify you from dental implants. What matters most is your overall health, bone quality, and ability to heal. We evaluate each patient individually and coordinate with physicians when needed.

What if I’ve been told I’m not a candidate for implants?
Many patients seek a second opinion with us. Using advanced imaging, sedation options, and careful medical planning, we are often able to treat patients who were turned away elsewhere.

How long does the dental implant process take?
The full process usually takes several months. This includes implant placement, healing time for the bone to bond with the implant, and placement of the final tooth or teeth. Temporary teeth are often used so you’re not without a smile during healing.

Can dental implants replace dentures?
Yes. Dental implants can replace one tooth, several teeth, or support full-arch restorations such as All-on-X implant dentures. Many patients choose implants because they want teeth that stay in place and feel more natural than removable dentures.

Is dental implant surgery safe for medically complex patients?
Yes, when properly planned. At NOVA Dental Anesthesia, implant care and anesthesia are overseen by Dr. Wissam Ali, allowing us to safely treat anxious and medically complex patients with continuous monitoring.

Will insurance cover dental implants?
Coverage varies by plan. Some plans cover portions of implant treatment, while others do not. Our team reviews benefits with you and explains costs clearly before treatment begins.
