We will see you more frequently (3-4 timers per year) during the first 12-18 months following SRP. This is done so to insure a complete and positive response to treatment. If warranted, and if things improve, we may lengthen your cleaning interval or otherwise customize a cleaning schedule appropriate for your needs. Our goal is to ensure a resolution of the disease process and prevent any additional deterioration of the gum tissue and bone that support your teeth.

What to Expect: Some discomfort, bleeding and /or swelling are expected after having periodontal therapy

Care of your Mouth: We recommend rinsing your mouth several times on the day with warm saltwater (1 tsp of table salt per 8oz of warm water). A medicated antibacterial rinse may be dispensed to help promote gum healing if deemed necessary.

Discomfort: You may experience slight “achy” or sore feeling around the teeth for several days. For mild pain after the numbness wear off, you can take 2 Tylenol, Motrin or Advil (avoid Aspirin) every 6 hours unless contraindicated. Sensitivity to hot and cold foods or drinks (and sometimes sweets) may occur for up to four to six weeks duration. This is a normal course of healing. Be sure to use fluoride toothpaste or rinse to help re-mineralize teeth and relieve tooth sensitivity. Some patient may feel no discomfort after treatment.

Bleeding and Swelling: Light bleeding following procedure is normal. Swelling or jaw stiffness occur very rarely. A warm moist towel can be used to help relieve swelling/stiffness for about 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off for a few days following treatment.

Brushing: Start brushing, flossing, you may have to GO EASY today, but make every effort to keep your mouth plaque free. Return to normal gentle circular brushing tomorrow. Remember never brush with a medium or hard bristle toothbrush or in an aggressive manner

Flossing: Start flossing every day after day 2 of your treatment. Remember, brushing alone will only remove part of the bacteria and plaque that is forming in your mouth every day. You need

Diet: Your next meal should consist of only soft foods, Avoid any hard or crunchy foods for next 3-4 days (popcorn, chips, pretzels).

Smoking: Now is great time to quit smoking. Do not smoke following deep cleaning procedure for at least 48 hours. Tobacco smoke will prolong or discourage the healing process.
