Adult & Children’s Special Needs in Virginia

Comprehensive Dental Treatment for Adult and Children who have Special Needs

adult and child dentist in Burke VA

At NOVA Dental Anesthesia, our dentists specialize in serving the Adult and Children’s Special Needs community. These patients are widely underserved and are all too often neglected due to lack of patient cooperation. They are usually referred from dentist to dentist, often with no resolution in sight. The younger special needs population are sometimes able to be treated by a pediatric dentist who offers sedation options, but most of the time that level of sedation does not suffice. And as the patients grow up, pediatric dentists are unable to perform procedures on the adult patients. Parents and caretakers are often at a loss when it comes to dental treatment for their special need loved ones. Some dentists may be able to perform a “cleaning” on these adult patients, but this cleaning is often well below the standard of care and addresses the least of the patient’s dental needs. More comprehensive treatment that includes root canals, extractions, deep cleanings, treatment of infections and much more is generally neglected.

Parents and caretakers of this population are overwhelmed with comfort once they find our practice.  At NOVA Dental Anesthesia, we are proud to offer a full suite of professional and safe anesthetic services and care for every dental treatment that we provide in our state-of-the-art facility. We have 2 in-house, hospital-trained, anesthesiologists who are able to provide anesthesia and dental services to children and adult special needs patients affected by, but not limited to, the following disabilities:

  • Autism (Autism Spectrum Disorder)
  • Angelman syndrome
  • Down Syndrome
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)/ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder)
  • Epilepsy and other Seizure Disorders
  • Mental Challenges
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Alzheimer’s or dementia, and many others.

Our anesthesiologists are not only part of the sedation consultation but are also involved in every step of our patient’s treatment process, beginning with the very first dental consultation. We continue to maintain a close relationship with each of our patients throughout their years of treatment with us. A feeling of fulfillment comes after receiving genuine gratitude from a parent, who has been desperately seeking proper treatment for their child or loved one. A growing need for appropriate dental treatment for this underserved population is urgent and we are eager to make a positive impact in their lives and fulfill this need.
